The pervasive belief that we as humans are somehow separate from nature. In ecotherapy, we view this sense of separation and alienation from the natural world as a source of suffering and dysfunction that contributes to feelings of alienation from ourselves, our loved ones, and the world around us.
Foundational Attachment is a term coined by Dave Talamo at Wilderness Reflections, which refers to the parallels between our connection with nature and our human bonding attachment patterns. We are inseparable from the natural world and are made up of the same natural elements found throughout the cosmos. We live in complete dependence on the Earth and are supported by the Earth in every moment. Thus, therapy sessions in nature provide a remarkable opportunity to heal attachment wounding. Additionally, the outdoors is an ideal setting for trauma processing through bilateral stimulation and somatic mindfulness.
